After five years, you will have to renew the substitute license. Download an application for Renewal of the Substitute Teaching License from the Iowa Department of Education Board of Education Examiner's website, print it, and fill it out. This application is different than the application for an Iowa substitute teaching license.
Along with the renewal form, applicants also need to include a transcript showing renewal credit either from an accredited college or from an AEA staff development course. These credits should be current within 5 years. (Continuing education units are not accepted as credit.) In lieu of such credit, you may provide proof--verified by the districts you have served--that you substituted 30 days under you previous licenses . (Ask the district in which you substituted to verify on the renewal form the approximate time range of service and days of service. If you taught in multiple districts, ask for brief letters from each stating the name of the district, the time range of service and days of service.) You must verify 30 days, no more is necessary. You must also supply a copy of the certificate that verifies your completion of mandatory reporter training on child abuse. In addition to the paperwork, an $85 check or money order (not cash) for processing completes the materials you submit..
